New Plants
This time of year I feel like a kid in a candy store when all the great new plants are introduced. It’s probably a good thing that my garden is not any bigger as I have a good excuse to say “no more.” For those of you who have room or are just ready to try something new here are a few ideas to get you started.

Agastache is a great hummingbird magnet and I try to use it in my garden design as much as possible. Terra Nova has introduced  Agastache ‘Cotton Candy’ which is a beautiful pink color and grows best in well-drained soil in full sun.

‘Capriccio' ornamental grass, introduced by Ball Horticultural, has the graceful weeping beauty typical of stipa. It is quite drought-tolerant, and while it is not hardy in my area, I will be using it in containers.

My friend, Mary, used to tell me how beautiful hosta were and I would always reply “Slug bait.” Over the years, especially as I design more shade gardens, I have come to realize that Mary was right. And one of the most beautiful new hosta has to be ‘Trifecta’ Introduced by Briggs Nursery, this hosta’s leaves carry beautiful shades of green, white and chartreuse and are textured almost like seersucker. It makes a great small mound for the front of the shady border.

Euphorbia ‘Diamond Frost’ has been out for a few years now, but it is still one of my favorites. A drought-tolerant, low-maintenance plant with beautiful dainty white flowers all over it – what’s not to love? This is the perfect “filler” plant for any container recipe.

We’ve all fallen in love with the Endless Summer hydrangeas because they are forgiving of our botched pruning attempts. Since they bloom on both old and new wood, we can never do too much damage. Well, now there is a lace cap to add to the Endless Summer family. It’s called Endless Summer ‘Twist-N-Shout’, which is what I’ll be doing as I enjoy its summer-long flowers.
